Frankly, in a book store this one would not have caught my attention despite the fact I have a degree in Pure Mathematics from Madras University obtained decades ago. My journalist friends often wonder why on earth with such a degree I chose a profession where two plus two was often six or eight! Around 45 years in the profession, I never encountered Integral or Differential Calculus, stayed away from Limits and Binomial Theorem and only vaguely recollected that Trigonometry was about Sine, Cosine and so on.

Mystery of ‘God Particle’

Standard Model of particle physics is a frame work of laws that describes the behaviour of fundamental particle. Weight is arrived at by multiplying mass   into gravitational force. There was no answer to the question of formation of mass before the work of Peter Higgs. Anything unexplainable was attributed to as the act of god. In the case of mass formation also it was like that prior to the discovery of Higgs boson particle.

The process of mass formation could have happened a billionth of a second after the Big Bang 13.82 billion years ago. Higgs work was important to understand what the mechanism of mass formation was.

PETER WARE HIGGS WINNER OF NOBEL PRIZE 2013 FOR PHYSICS

Peter Ware Higgs is a British theoretical physicist, Nobel Prize laureate and emeritus professor at the University of Edinburgh. He is best known for his 1960s proposal of broken symmetry in electroweak theory, explaining the origin of mass of elementary particles in general. This so-called Higgs mechanism, which was proposed by several physicists besides Higgs at about the same time, predicts the existence of a new particle, the Higgs boson .
