1920-1978

E.V.R.Maniammai, wife of the great revolutionary Periyar E.V.Ramasamy headed the  Dravidian Movement from 1973 after the demise of Periyar.
In 1958, DK cadres went on agitation towards the abolition of caste and were arrested. Two people died in prison on March 8th and 10th. The Jailor of the Prison refused to hand over the dead bodies. E.V.R.Maniammai represented it to the then Chief Minister Thiru.K.Kamarajar and brought the dead bodies from the jail and led the funeral march.

Meaning of Social Justice:

The modern concept of ‘social justice’ may be traced from Thomas Paine, (1737 -1809) one of the architects of USA, born in England and lived mostly in France. In his book titled ‘Rights of Man’ published in 1791, he states that ‘Whatever is my right as a man is also the right of another: and it becomes my duty to guarantee as well as to posses’. He further states, that for any country to claim that its poor are happy, ‘neither ignorance nor distress is to be found among them’.

Methinks as though a ministership in the Madras Cabinet is the last  Act in a man’s life. Methinks too that he must have burnt his boats and mumbled his last prayers; he must have written ‘finis’ to the chapter of his political life and laid down his office and retired, unhonoured and unsung. For an ex-Minister of the  Madras Cabinet is either an exhaust volcano or merely a spent up force.

BATTLE FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE IN U.S A LESSON FOR INDIA

The battle for social justice in India is against  discrimination based  on   caste system.  Discrimination in  U.S.  is on colour of skin of the Afro-Americans.  It was Periyar and Ambedkar who fought for  social justice in India, while Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, fought for the rights of the Black in the U.S.  Martin Luther King  received  Margaret Sanger Award for “his courageous resistance to bigotry and his lifelong dedication to the advancement of social justice and human dignity”.
