FIR against Rationalist K.S.BHAGAVAN

Action on complaint of anti-Constitutional basis to be condemned

As a sequence of assassination of the rationalists Dr. Narendra Dabolkar (August 20, 2013), Govind Pansare (February 20, 2015) and  M.M.Kalburgi (August 30, 2015), death threat given by the right wing elements to the life of the rationalist Prof. K.S.Bhagavan has to be viewed vigilantly by the law and order enforcing authority of the State.

On the contrary, a criminal complaint has been lodged against him alleging his utterances on Hinduism and Hindu Gods had hurt the religious sentiments and based on it an FIR has been filed.

Besides K.S.Bhagavan, Chandrasekara Patil aka Champa, an acclaimed Kanada playwright based at Dharwad was also complained on the same ground. A case has been booked against the duo under IPC Section 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and Section 295 A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs).

The Karnataka Sahitya Academy has decided to honour the rationalist K.S.Bhagavan with Honorary Awards for Life Time Achievement for 2013. Sahitya Academy has complained about receiving a threatening call as well as several abusive calls for choosing K.S.Bhagavan for the award. Police has provided security to the literary body.

Despite the series of rationalist assassination had taken place, sufficient positive action is not being taken besides the persistant lacunae in the follow of action by the police to identify the killers. Not much breakthrough has so far taken place in the investigations. All the rationalist fraternity and the peace loving activists have joined in condemning the baseless complaint lodged by the right wing individuals with their organisational support.

To the opposition raised by the Hindutva activists, K.S.Bhagavan has said, “What I have been doing is fulfilling my constitutional responsibility. Sadly, it is being portrayed as something wrong by a section of society. Those who are opposing rationalism and scientific temper are carrying out anti-constitutional acts. I request them to introspect on this.”

The constitution clearly states that it is the duty of every citizen to promote rationalism, scientific temper and reform, K.S.Bhagavan said while addressing at the 109th birth anniversary of Bhagat Singh. While addressing students further he said “parents instill the fear of god in children and condition them in that regard. To be free of this, students should be born again. Bhagat Singh has written a well argued essay, ‘Why I am an Atheist?’ all student should read this essay”.

The relentless rationalist K.S.Bhagavan is continuing his mission of propagating rationalism unmindful of the forthcoming  meaningless oppositions and threats.

We, rationalist movement founded by Periyar condemn the atrocious and ill intentional complaint lodged by the right wing activist and we will stand like rock, supportive to the mission, shouldered by K.S.Bhagavan.
