In 1957 itself, Periyar led massive agitations to remove the provisions in Indian Constitution that give significance to castes . In this historical agitation for the eradication of castes , thousands of black shirt cadres participated as families including ladies and children, courted arrest and imprisoned for a period ranging from one to three years. The struggle against caste system has been a continuous one in the functional agenda of Periyar Movement and the Youth Wing conference is the turning point. Thousands of DK Cadres expressed their willingness to participate in the declared agitation and their preparedness for courting arrest and imprisonment.
