Sethu Canal Scheme is a project in the minds of patriotic Tamils for more than a century. The estimate of the scheme is Rs 2427 cores. More than 75% of the Canal Work has been completed so far and only less than 15 km of the work is to be done. Mean while the Hindu religious fundamentalists are trying to stop the work at the concluding stage. It will only mean the gross wastage of Tax-payers’ money.
The Supreme Court should be guided by the Indian Constitution which according to article 51A(h) gives importance to scientific temperment. Dr. Pachori Committee which was appointed according to the order of the Supreme Court has recommended the sixth path as the most suitable scheme to implement the Sethu Canal. To tell the truth when the BJP was the ruling party at the Centre, it decided to implement the project through the sixth path.
Now the same BJP is putting forward the idea of Raman Bridge according to mythology that was built 17 lakh years ago! Aringnar Anna seventy years ago entered into a historic debate with Tamil scholars like R.P. Sethu Pillai and Somasundara Bharathiyar about the authenticity of Ramayana. Periyar and Anna wanted the Ramayana to be burnt in Public places.
Pandit Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India in his book “Discovery of India” has emphatically stated that Ramayana is a fiction like “Arabian Nights” and not a real story. Rajaji also echoed the opinion of Nehru in 1930.
The ruling party of Tamil Nadu which is bearing the name ‘Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’ is doing great injustice to the name of Anna, the Ingersoll of Tamil Nadu. To call the sixth path as the Raman Bridge by ADMK will only mean the domination of Aryan philosophy into the Dravidian Movement founded by Periyar and Anna.
If this scheme was implemented it will act as a link between the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal. It will also facilitate the growth of Thothukudi Harbour and thereby the economic development of Southern Districts of Tamil Nadu.
The import and export trade will increase by this Sethu Canal and thereby the industrial development of India will be achieved. The industrial growth will provide employment to thousands of youths. It will facilitate the earning of foreign exchange through external trade.
Many leaders of various political parties have gathered in Madurai on 26th October 2012 under the auspices of Madurai District Dravidar Kazhagam. Cutting across party lines the Tamils must unite to implement the Sethu Canal without any further delay. The leader of Dravidar Kazhagam Dr. K. Veeramaniyar must take over the leadership of this noble movement.

• Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge ; it is those who know little, not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science.
• It is not the strongest of the species that survives, not the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.
