A Whirlpool – slurring reputation is where women can commonly get thrown into. When former French Health Minister Simone Veil and her sister managed to survive Hitler’s Nazi death camp, anti-Semitic Frenchmen made disparaging, gender-denigrating, judgmental remarks like, “How did they come back? It proves that it was not that bad.” Is it fair to victimise women victims with excoriating mental torture over and over?
On Indian TV, a woman was protesting to local politicians about her neighbour being raped. When they went to the police station, the policeman demanded the raped woman’s character certificate from the Municipal Commissioner before filing the case. Similarly, in Kolkata, a woman politician said the 38-year-old mother of two who was gang-raped last February by fellow Park Street night-clubbers was “a misunderstanding between a lady and her client”.

Religion cannot and should not be replaced by atheism. Religion needs to go away and not be replaced by anything. Atheism is not a religion. It’s the absence of religion, and that’s a wonderful thing.
Religion is not morality. Theists ask me, “If there’s no god, what would stop me from raping and killing everyone I want to.” My answer is always: “I, myself, have raped and killed everyone I want to … and the number for both is zero.” Behaving morally because of a hope of reward or a fear of punishment is not morality. Morality is not bribery or threats. Religion is bribery and threats. Humans have morality. We don’t need religion.
One recently discussed Bill is on Constitutional amendment permitting ‘Reservation in Promotion to SC/ST’. The question of “Reservation in Promotion’ is unfortunately viewed as a divisive issue instead of an empowerment issue. If the representation of SC/ST population in government services and Public Sector is not adequate at higher levels even after six decades of the Republic, not to speak of the pathetically low representation in Private sector, the issue has to go beyond mere reservation.
The recent gruesome incident of rape and murder of a Delhi Medical Student has evoked multifarious responses, prescriptions, analysis, recommendations of stringent punishment etc.
Never has India witnessed such vociferous yelling of a cry for justice for rape victim. Whenever there is a mass public appraisal of any offence, the politicians in India would make a capital out of it, giving a political twist to whatever be the issue, seeking political mileage.
