In India, it is well known that couples shopping for sperm demand both looks and brains. What is not so well known, despite being fairly common place, is a more outrageous request: Caste based sperm.
Childless couples insist on knowing the caste of sperm donors. While one may be tempted to assume that caste biases are entrenched only in states like Bihar, there is a definite preference for Brahmin donors in Mumbai. Even among Muslims, couples want to know whether the donor is Sunni or Shite.

Every gametic cell (sperm) has got various genetic traits which would be reflected either dominant (known visibly) or recessive (not visible) in the next generation. The reflection of the dominant or recessive nature is not within our control.
It is based on the opposite sex, genetic cell and prevalence and expression of dominant and recessive character while getting united (fertilization). By choosing of gene, the required character, in the next generation itself cannot result as per the prediction. This is possibly due to the fact that the union of gametic cells and the expression of characters in the next generation cannot be predetermined.
When the expression of character with responsible gene identification can not be predetermined in combination, shopping for caste based sperm like Brahmin’s sperm is a futile exercise. There are genes responsible for features and talents but not so for brahminical traits. Still the false belief of supremacy of Brahmins prevails among the gullible mass!
